Our progress to net-zero by 2035

ASM is committed to leading the semiconductor industry toward a sustainable future by aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our value chain by 2035. As the first company in our sector to receive Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero target verification, we are setting a bold example for climate action and collaboration.

ASM’s commitment to a sustainable future

In 2021, we announced our net-zero ambition. Since then, we have made significant progress, including a rapid transition to renewable electricity – rising from just 10% in 2020 to 100% across all global operations by 2024. This milestone contributed to a 52% reduction in our combined Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. We also deepened engagement with our suppliers, with 96% of our critical partners submitting climate disclosures by 2024.

Collaborating across our value chain

Working toward net-zero by 2035 is a challenge that no company can achieve alone. At ASM, we recognize that meaningful climate action requires deep collaboration across the entire semiconductor industry.  ASM supports suppliers through direct partnerships, the Catalyze program, and industry initiatives like the Semiconductor Climate Consortium to drive renewable energy adoption and shared sustainability efforts. By aligning on best practices, and supporting one another’s sustainability journeys, we can amplify our collective impact and accelerate the industry’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Our Climate Transition Plan, published in March 2024, is built on this principle. It outlines how we work together with suppliers, customers, and partners to drive progress at every stage of our value chain.

  • Scope 1 & 2:
Decarbonizing our own operations through energy efficiency, electrification, and sourcing 100% renewable electricity.

  • Scope 3.1:
Working with suppliers to decarbonize the supply chain, encouraging renewable energy adoption, responsible sourcing, enhanced sustainability requirements, and direct engagement initiatives such as the SCORE (Supplier Consulting in Optimization, Renewables, and Emissions) program.

  • Scope 3.11:
Innovating to reduce emissions from product use by developing energy-efficient equipment, offering retrofit kits to extend tool lifetimes, and encouraging renewable energy adoption to help lower ASM customer emissions.

Our decarbonization roadmap is structured in three phases: short-term (0–3 years), focusing on operational improvements and supplier data; medium-term (3–7 years), scaling efficiency and circularity; and long-term (>7 years), driving innovation and far-reaching transformation across the value chain transformation.

Ever closer to 2035

Looking ahead, ASM will continue to invest in capability development, operational efficiency, and new technologies that support our net-zero ambition. In 2025, we aim to accelerate decarbonization through targeted initiatives, including scaling direct supplier engagement via the SCORE program, pushing for renewable energy deals through Catalyze, and advancing cohort efforts toward more tangible industry-wide climate action. We are also exploring opportunities to grow revenue by offering lower-carbon intensity products and services to our customers.

Striving for ambitious aims like net-zero by 2035 depends on active engagement and partnership across our value chain. By working together with suppliers, customers, and stakeholders, and by maintaining transparency in our progress, we're not only aiming for our own targets but also enabling driving broader transformation throughout the semiconductor industry.
