The Challenge

As a Patent Counsel in our Kawasaki office, you are primarily responsible for drafting and prosecuting patents linked to ASM’s process and engineering activities globally. This includes maintaining close contact with the inventor community and staying in touch with R&D activities, managing a diverse technology portfolio, outside counsel and aligning the global protection strategy with business leadership. To be successful in this role, you must be a master of prioritizing and balancing a demanding workload. This isn’t for the faint at heart, but for those who are focused, self-motivated and have impeccable problem-solving skills, the opportunities abound in a rapidly growing and globally diverse high technology company. You will be trusted to take full ownership of your projects – with the right balance of support and autonomy.
You will have flexibility in how you manage your day. You will report to the Patent Counsel team lead and will have a strong working relation with your Patent Counsel colleagues across the globe, as well as IP Managers embedded in our business units. You will be part of ASM’s global IP team with representation in the US, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Italy, Finland and the Netherlands.

Location
This role is based in Kanagawa, Kawasaki Japan. We would also consider working locations such as Korea, US (Phoenix, AZ), Belgium or Finland. In this position, travel is not required but could be accommodated if interested.
Education
- Degree in chemistry, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or other relevant semiconductor engineering discipline.
- We especially welcome applicants who are qualified as a patent attorney or patent agent in any major jurisdiction (EP, US, KR, or JP).
Experience
- You have a strong experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, managing an IP portfolio, and coordinating outside legal counsel work.
- Experience with IP-related contracts and other forms of intellectual property (industrial designs, trademarks and/or trade secrets) is a plus.
