The Challenge

At ASM, we view our intellectual property as one of our critical assets enabling our success in the marketplace. As an IP Counsel in our Helsinki or Leuven office, you are primarily responsible for intellectual property management linked to process and engineering activities globally. This includes maintaining close contact with the inventor community and staying in touch with R&D activities to harvest invention disclosures, managing a diverse technology portfolio, and determining the global intellectual property protection strategy aligned with business leadership. This isn’t for the faint at heart, but for those who are focused, self-motivated and have impeccable problem-solving skills.

 

You will be trusted to take full ownership of your projects – with the right balance of support and autonomy. You will report to the IP Counsel team lead and will be embedded in one of our Business Units. You will have a strong working relation with your IP Counsel colleagues across the globe, as well as Patent Counsels whose focus is preparation and prosecution of patent applications. You will be part of ASM’s global IP and licensing team with representation in the US, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Italy, Finland and the Netherlands.

Location

This role is based In Helsinki, Finland or Leuven, Belgium. In this position, required travel will be limited to two weeks per year. Regular travel is not required but could be accommodated if interested.

 

Education

  • A degree in chemistry, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or other relevant semiconductor engineering discipline is required.
  • A qualification as a patent attorney or patent agent in any major jurisdiction (EP, US, KR, or JP) is an asset.

 

Experience

  • Technical experience in the semiconductor industry is an asset.
  • Experience in intellectual property, either in-house or in private practice, is an asset.

 

Required skills

  • Able to operate effectively in a multicultural, dynamic and demanding high tech environment
  • Harvesting invention disclosures
  • Providing advice on intellectual property aspects of agreements
  • Self-driven and capable of operating in a high-performance team
  • Able to analyze IP situation as well as relevant future IP developments to conceptualize this into reliable intellectual property assets
  • Able to communicate a complex message clearly
  • Agility to adapt to changing circumstances
