Job’s mission
At ASM, innovation is a team sport. As a Senior Process Engineer in our Corporate Research & Development team in Helsinki, Finland, you’ll help us develop the atomic-level technologies that shape tomorrow’s chips. You'll bring deep domain knowledge in materials science, chemistry, or process engineering, and apply it to create industry-leading thin film deposition processes. You’ll explore new chemistries, test theories, and turn scientific insight into tangible process solutions that scale.
Whether you’re designing new ALD processes, interpreting experimental data, optimizing systems, or collaborating with global stakeholders, your work will help accelerate breakthroughs in logic, memory, analog, and power applications. You'll not only contribute to ASM's technological roadmap — you'll help shape the semiconductor industry itself.
What you will be working on
-
Drive innovation in ALD by developing new thin film processes and materials for next-generation semiconductor devices
-
Design and execute experiments, plan test sequences, and use data analytics to draw meaningful conclusions from complex data sets
-
Work hands-on with cutting-edge process equipment, pushing the performance envelope of both hardware and process integration
-
Collaborate with internal and external R&D teams, defining requirements and translating scientific ideas into industrial process solutions
-
Support knowledge transfer by preparing technical documentation, leading demonstrations, and occasionally traveling to ASM and customer sites
-
Contribute to global projects, sharing best practices and insights across multidisciplinary teams and business units
-
Mentor junior engineers and researchers, sharing knowledge and fostering a collaborative, learning-oriented environment
What we are looking for
-
PhD in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or materials science, preferably with a thesis or publications in semiconductor processing or related fields
-
Hands-on experience with thin film deposition techniques, particularly ALD and/or CVD
-
Proficiency in materials characterization methods such as XPS, AFM, XRD, XRF, ellipsometry, and electrical characterization
-
Strong understanding of semiconductor physics, advanced chemistries, and the interaction between materials, process, and hardware
-
Proven ability to plan, conduct, and lead scientific and engineering projects from concept to execution
-
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders
-
Strong collaboration skills and a proactive, ownership-driven mindset
What sets you apart
-
Experience optimizing deposition processes in an industrial or high-tech R&D setting
-
Familiarity with process scale-up and transfer into manufacturing environments
-
A creative and analytical thinker who can connect the dots between scientific theory and practical application
-
Comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams and navigating ambiguity
-
Willingness to travel occasionally to support global ASM sites and customer collaborations
-
Passion for technology, continuous learning, and personal growth
