Climate action

ASM is committed to improving people’s lives and creating a better future for all. We recognize that climate change is one of humanity's biggest challenges and a shared global risk. As a worldwide community, we need to find ways to accelerate progress toward Net Zero and mitigate the effects of climate change – like extreme weather events, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss.

Our goals

Ambitious but necessary

2035 We aim to reach Net Zero

100% Renewable Electricity by 2024

We believe that our innovations will play a crucial role in advancing the scientific insights and technological possibilities that will make a meaningful difference in restoring climate balance going forward. And we are taking targeted action to do our part and reduce our own climate impact as much as possible.

Net Zero by 2035

In 2021, we announced our ambitious target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2035, for all scopes, and aligned with the Paris Agreement 1.5°C pathway set out by the United Nations. We have already put in motion a forward-thinking climate policy for ASM as a whole, which includes setting near and long-term targets for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The aim is to reduce our GHG emissions as near to zero as possible, and then neutralize any remaining emissions. On our way to these targets, we are taking measures to conserve energy use throughout our operations and maximize the use of renewable electricity. We are also innovating and collaborating in our value chain to address our overall footprint.

In July 2023, our net-zero targets for all scopes were verified by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), as the first in the semiconductor industry. In March 2024, we published our Climate Transition Plan, not just as statement of intent, but as our blueprint for action.

Renewable Electricity

As a first major step toward our Net Zero 2035 target, we have committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. That’s the emissions that we create directly (Scope 1), or stem from electricity that we buy from third parties (Scope 2). For ASM, our indirect emissions through purchased electricity are the most significant factor we are looking to improve.

We have set an ambitious target for 2024: sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable sources for all our global operations. We are working towards achieving this in two phases:

  1. From 2021 onwards: source 100% of electricity from renewable sources for key sites in Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United States.

  1. From 2024 onwards: source 100% of electricity from renewable sources for the remainder of our global operations

For 2023 we grew our share of renewable electricity to 88% of our global operational footprint. We continuously assess opportunities and drive further electricity conservation in our operations worldwide.

Collaboration

ASM is proud to be a founding member of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC). This value chain alliance for the semiconductor sector was formed in late 2022. Its goal is to speed up our industry’s collective progress on climate issues by leveraging the potential to collaborate. ASM was a primary contributor to forming the SCC, joined as a Founding Member, and we were honored to be elected to chair the SCC’s governing council for the second year in 2024.

Additionally, ASM is a charter member of SEMI’s Sustainability Advisory Council (SAC), and we actively participate in several working groups. The SAC and the SCC are just two examples of how ASM aspires to collaborate, engage, lead, and inspire scale for positive impact.
