Extended ESG information

This section provides supplementary sustainability information that complements our annual reporting and offers additional context on our ESG performance and commitments.

Circularity and resource management

ASM is committed to promoting a more circular economy. In this sustainable production model, we see long-term opportunities for ASM in operations, product design, logistics and packaging, and building design.

For example, we are focusing on responsible resource consumption. This is a direct way to reduce materials usage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately, our ambition is to eliminate all waste through avoidance, reuse, or recycling. Where we encounter challenges – such as limited regional capabilities for recycling or reclaiming or the mandatory mixing of waste streams for regional sorting – we apply our passion for innovation and collaboration to help develop a better approach.

We track and account for all waste generated at our production and engineering sites. In 2024, we achieved an 82% recycling and reuse rate for non-hazardous solid waste across ASM operations.

Regarding hazardous waste, ASM prioritizes minimizing its generation and managing it responsibly. In 2024, our global operations generated 10.3 metric tons of hazardous waste. The table below provides the specific volumes for each disposal method.

Environmental management system

We are certified globally to the ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS), including all our primary engineering and manufacturing locations.

This EMS ensures that we are consistent in our operations and provides a foundation for best practices to be shared and learned across our sites. Read on to discover our practices and policies across different aspects of our sustainable operations.

Government affairs

Governance and oversight

ASM’s Government Relations function is part of the CEO organization, ensuring direct executive oversight of our public policy activities. The head of Government Relations, along with regional government affairs leads, coordinates advocacy efforts globally. This structure provides accountability at the highest level and promotes globally consistent messaging. We engage with public stakeholders both directly and through collaborations with industry associations and expert public affairs consultancies to advance ASM’s strategic objectives.

Climate policy engagement

ASM supports policies aligned with the Paris Agreement and our own Net Zero 2035 ambition. Priorities include energy efficiency standards, renewable energy infrastructure, and public-private partnerships to advance climate innovation and clean semiconductor technologies. ASM's lobbying is transparent and overseen rigorously. In 2024, our engagement focused on broader industry issues, not specifically climate-related legislation. All initiatives comply with disclosure regulations and align with ASM’s policies and sustainability standards.

Review and alignment process

ASM has robust internal processes to review and monitor our lobbying activities and industry association memberships for alignment with our company policies. On at least an annual basis, we evaluate our direct advocacy positions and our associations’ public policy stances. This regular review ensures that ASM’s participation continues to be beneficial and aligned with our sustainability commitments. If we find any misalignment or areas of concern, they are flagged for management attention and action.

In the event that ASM identifies a misalignment between our climate change stance and that of an industry association or any lobbying activity, we take case-by-case action to address it. This includes actively engaging with the association’s leadership or the relevant working group to communicate our climate position and encourage realignment with the Paris Agreement’s objectives. ASM believes in collaboration and positive influence, so we work from within to help steer the group’s policies toward consistency with science-based climate goals. If an organization were to adopt a position or undertake lobbying contrary to our climate goals and if our engagement efforts do not resolve the issue, ASM assesses other viable actions. This could include withdrawing our support, abstaining from that specific initiative, or, if necessary, ending our membership or involvement in the association.

By setting this expectation, we ensure that ASM’s association memberships remain a force for progress on climate action, not an obstacle. This approach of proactive engagement and principled escalation guarantees that our influence and resources are consistently used in support of the net-zero transition.

ASM did not make any contributions to political campaigns, political candidates, or lobbying organizations in the 2021–2024 reporting period.

Performance through trusted ratings

ASM engages with several leading ESG rating agencies to support transparency and continuous improvement in our sustainability performance. These include CDP for Climate Change and Water Security, S&P Global CSA, Sustainalytics, MSCI ESG, ISS ESG, and FTSE Russell. Each provides an independent perspective on how we manage environmental, social, and governance topics. These assessments help us benchmark our progress, identify areas for improvement, and align with the expectations of our stakeholders. They also support our efforts to create long-term value and reinforce our commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices.
